How to use this at the piano
  1. Put the tablet on the piano, about an arm's length from the keys.
  2. Tap “Enable microphone” and allow it. A quiet room helps it hear you.
  3. Play middle C — the bar at the top should name it.
  4. No microphone? Tap the piano on the screen instead. Everything still works.

🗺️ The map of the staff

Every note lives on a line or in a space. Learn these four sentences and you can work out any note on the page.

Treble clef — lines (bottom to top)

Every Good Boy Does Fine

Lines: E · G · B · D · F

Treble clef — spaces

The spaces spell FACE

Spaces: F · A · C · E

Bass clef — lines (bottom to top)

Good Boys Do Fine Always

Lines: G · B · D · F · A

Bass clef — spaces

All Cows Eat Grass

Spaces: A · C · E · G

Middle C sits on its own little ledger line between the two staves — one line below the treble staff, one line above the bass staff. Notes climb line–space–line–space, so a note one step above a line is always the next letter name.

🌟 Progress

Saved on this device between visits. Weak notes are the pitches he has missed most — a few minutes on those in the trainer moves them fastest.

This week

No finished sessions yet this week. Sessions appear here when he taps “Finish practice” at the end of a sitting.

Notes that need work

No weak notes yet — notes appear here once they have been attempted a few times.

Slowest notes — reading speed

Response times appear here once notes have been read correctly a few times in the trainer.

The piano you hear is a real one: the Salamander Grand Piano — a Yamaha C5 grand recorded note by note by Alexander Holm and shared under a CC BY 3.0 licence. Every note the coach plays is that piano, struck softly or firmly just as the music asks.

    The piano

On a computer: the bottom letter row (Z X C…) plays from C3, the top letter row (Q W E…) from C4, with the keys above them as the black keys. In “Watch me first” demos the keys press themselves and show the fingering from the printed score.
